Pottery Barn: DIY Version Desk

Nicole wants to build a new table that mimic the look of his inspiration Pottery Barn. When Nicole fell in love with Pottery Barn desk he knew he could not, he decided to create their own DIY version. Using the tables on them Effektiv from IKEA and two wooden file cabinet he found on Craigslist.

Nicole painted the desk and filing cabinets (only $75 for the pair) in Timid White by Benjamin Moore. She removed the legs from the Effektiv desk and created mental metal braces to attach the pieces of the desktop together and to secure it to the wall in the corner. The side portions of the desktop simply rest on the top of the file cabinets. The change between the before and after is dramatic, and Nicole's finished product is a DIY inspiration.

You still need to figure out your ideal desk height. We've got a trick that will instantly tell you if your desk is the right height for you—even if you've got your eye on a tricky standing desk. Shopping for a new desk can be pretty overwhelming. Even after you've figured out the style and layout of the desk you want ( here's a great guide to help you choose a great shape)

Discovering your individual ideal desk height can be a tough task if you're shopping for something unconventional (like a standing desk) or building your own (maybe hanging a shelf-desk).

But we've got a trick that's never failed us: When you're seated or standing in the position you'd use the desk, rest your arms at your sides, keeping your elbow at a 90 degree angle and your upper arms in line with your torso. If the desk is the right height, your hands should rest comfortable on the desk.

If it's not just right, you're signing yourself up for a lifetime of back, neck and shoulder strain. Better to get the right desk now than regret it as you're cursing your sore shoulders later.

But if you're finding that your desk at home doesn't fit the bill, don't stress. If you can't change your desk, change your chair. Mess with your desk chair's adjustments or shop around for a new one that puts you at the right height for your office.

Beamer's living room space

No real rigs. Just obsession with hiding wires. I'm a zip-tie magician. The only real "rig" on my current home setup (MacBook Pro, 23" cinema display) is moving one of the overhead shelves beneath the desk to hold all my business so the desk can look nice 'n clean.

Beamer notes he's moved to a new office in downtown San Jose with a smaller 1,100 square feet, but with similar organization and layout, a temporary loft until he finds a place to purchase to live/work for his business.

Thanks to Beamer for allowing to share this peek inside his previous work space, and we look forward to seeing what he does with his future space.

Situated in Yallingup, in the South West corner of Western Australia, the home got its name from the location chosen for the construction. Surrounded by a green environment, the residence gets plenty of sunshine through the glass walls that act as a canvas for the hill scenery outside. Brightly coloured stone stands at the base of the construction, while the two storeys are delimited by white concrete floors and ceilings.

An ordinary construction wouldn’t have looked as good in a natural landscape, but the Yallingup Residence makes the most of the available space and natural environment. Large rooms complete the exterior design by keeping the same design line and reusing the colourful stone motif we saw outside.
